A release built to dominate medium-dry lanes with sharper backend motion and improved carry. The success of the Typhoon reignited the iconic Hot line, but it also revealed the need for a stronger companion to handle more oil.
Description
Storm Monsoon — The Solid Partner to Typhoon for Medium Oil
The Typhoon Gets a Stronger Companion
The Storm Typhoon revived the Hot line with a pearl ball built for lighter conditions. It worked. Bowlers wanted more. The Storm Monsoon answers that call with a solid coverstock version on the same core. It handles more oil volume than the Typhoon while keeping the same Atmos A.I. Core dynamics. Where the Typhoon excels on dry-to-light oil, the Monsoon steps up to medium oil.
The Monsoon wraps the Atmos A.I. Core in Storm’s Reactor Solid coverstock at 2000 Grit Abralon. That combination creates a wider footprint on the lane and earlier midlane read. Storm’s testing shows up to a 5% higher strike percentage on off-pocket hits. The ball also features A.I. outer core technology for a unique RG/Diff combination. Available from 10 lb to 16 lb, this is a mid-performance solid built for the medium oil conditions most bowlers face.

🎓 Understanding the Atmos A.I. Core and Reactor Solid
2.53 RG — Medium-High for Controlled Length
The Atmos A.I. Core’s 2.53 RG at 15 lb sits in the medium-high range. That means the ball delays its roll slightly longer than a low-RG ball would. Even with a solid coverstock, this RG prevents the ball from reading too early. You get controlled length through the front of the lane. The ball enters the midlane before making its move. Storm’s A.I. outer core technology creates this RG/Diff combination. It’s a pairing you don’t often see in a symmetric core of this shape.
0.042 Differential — Moderate Flare for a Defined Shape
A 0.042 differential produces 4 to 5 inches of track flare. That’s moderate — enough to create a defined shape at the breakpoint. But not so much that the ball overreacts on medium conditions. Each revolution exposes fresh coverstock to the lane surface. That fresh surface creates friction right when you need it. The result is a smooth, controlled motion through the midlane with a defined backend. It’s not a violent move. It’s a strong, readable arc to the pocket.
How Reactor Solid Creates the Wider Footprint
Storm’s Reactor coverstock has been in the lineup for over a decade. It’s proven. The solid version grips the lane earlier than the Reactor Pearl on the Typhoon. The 2000 Grit Abralon finish adds midlane traction without being overly aggressive. That combination creates what Storm calls a “wider footprint” on the lane. In practical terms, the ball reads more of the lane surface. More surface contact means more control and more consistent reaction. The Monsoon won’t skid and snap like a pearl. It rolls into its shape smoothly and predictably.
Symmetric Core — Predictable and Versatile
The Atmos A.I. Core is a symmetric design. No mass bias. No intermediate differential. That means the motion is smooth and even from midlane to pins. Symmetric cores are easier to drill and more forgiving on layout choices. The ball produces consistent motion regardless of which layout your pro shop uses. That predictability is what makes the Monsoon a reliable medium oil option.
Off-Pocket Carry — What the Numbers Say
Storm’s testing data shows up to a 5% higher strike percentage on off-pocket hits. That means the Monsoon carries better than average when you don’t hit the pocket perfectly. In league play, those extra strikes add up. A few more carries per night can mean several pins on your average. The combination of core torque and solid coverstock traction produces strong pin action. Even on light hits, the ball transfers energy effectively.

💡 BowlersMart Tips: Getting the Most From the Storm Monsoon
Pairing With the Typhoon
The Monsoon and Typhoon share the same Atmos A.I. Core. That means similar feel in your hand and similar core dynamics. The difference is coverstock and surface. The Monsoon’s Reactor Solid at 2000 Grit reads the midlane earlier. The Typhoon’s Reactor Pearl with Power Edge Polish pushes longer. Start with the Monsoon on fresh medium oil patterns. Switch to the Typhoon as the pattern breaks down and the heads dry out. It’s one of the most natural two-ball pairings in Storm’s current lineup.
Surface Adjustments
The factory 2000 Grit Abralon finish is tuned for medium oil. For more traction on heavier conditions, take it down to 1000 or 1500 grit. That gives the solid coverstock even more bite in the midlane. For more length on lighter patterns, polish it to 3000 or 4000 grit. The Reactor Solid responds well to surface changes. Small grit adjustments make noticeable differences in ball motion.
When to Put the Monsoon Away
The Monsoon is built for medium oil. It’s not a heavy oil ball. On high-volume or long patterns, it won’t have enough total hook to get to the pocket. When that happens, step up to something with more differential and surface. Going the other direction — on very dry conditions, the Monsoon may read too early. That’s Typhoon territory. Know the ball’s range and stay within it.
Coverstock Care
Solid coverstocks absorb oil faster than pearls. Wipe the ball with an approved cleaner after every session. If you skip cleaning, the ball will lose traction and start skidding more. If the Monsoon feels sluggish or doesn’t hook like it used to, resurface it. A fresh 2000 Grit Abralon finish restores the factory reaction. Regular maintenance keeps the Reactor Solid performing at its best.
