JUNIOR GOLD CHAMPIONSHIPS FAQS

Official answers based on the 2026 Junior Gold rules.

Eligibility & Registration

Athletes qualify for the Junior Gold Championships by competing in approved Junior Gold qualifying events held between July 1, 2025 and May 1, 2026. These events are hosted by local associations, bowling centers, and tournament directors across the country.

To participate in a qualifying event, you must already hold an active Junior Gold membership. Qualifying events must consist of at least three games of scratch competition with a minimum of four Junior Gold members. Advancement ratios range from 1:4 to 1:10 depending on the event.

Once you qualify, you’ll receive a congratulations email from USBC and your name will appear on the advancer report at BOWL.com. You can then register for a squad.

To compete at the Junior Gold Championships, you need both:

1. USBC Youth Standard Membership โ€“ The national membership required for all sanctioned youth competition. This must be active and in good standing.

2. Junior Gold Membership โ€“ A separate membership specific to the Junior Gold program. Costs vary by division: $25 (U12), $40 (U14), $50 (U16), $50 (U18).

Both memberships must be active BEFORE you compete in any Junior Gold qualifying event. You can verify your membership status on BOWL.com’s Find-A-Memberโ€”a green icon indicates both memberships are active.

No. Junior Gold athletes must compete in the division that corresponds to their date of birth. There is no “playing up” to an older division. Division assignments are:

โ€ข U12: Born August 1, 2013 or later

โ€ข U14: Born August 1, 2011 โ€“ July 31, 2013

โ€ข U16: Born August 1, 2009 โ€“ July 31, 2011

โ€ข U18: Born August 1, 2007 โ€“ July 31, 2009

The total cost includes your Junior Gold membership fee plus the championship entry fee:

U12 Division: $25 membership + $150 entry = $175 total

U14 Division: $40 membership + $200 entry = $240 total

U16 Division: $50 membership + $250 entry = $300 total

U18 Division: $50 membership + $250 entry = $300 total

Entry fees are typically paid through your qualifying event coordinator. All scholarship portions (ranging from $75 per division) are returned 100% to competitors through SMART scholarships.

Competition & Format

The number of games depends on how far your athlete advances:

U14/U16/U18 Divisions:

โ€ข Qualifying: 16 games (four 4-game blocks)

โ€ข Advancers Round I: 5 additional games (21 total)

โ€ข Final Advancers: 5 additional games (26 total)

โ€ข Match Play: Two-game matches in double-elimination bracket

โ€ข TV Finals: Single-game stepladder with top 3

U12 Division:

โ€ข Qualifying: 16 games (four 4-game blocks)

โ€ข Final Advancers: 4 additional games (20 total)

โ€ข Match Play: Two-game matches through TV finals

Qualifying/Advancers Ties: If a tie exists for the final advancing position, ALL tied athletes advance to the next round.

Final Advancers Ties: Athletes tied for the final spot to match play compete in a one-game roll-off. If still tied, a one-ball roll-off continues until the tie is broken.

Match Play Ties: After a two-game match tie, a one-ball roll-off determines the winner. Higher seed chooses lane and order.

TV Finals Ties: A one-ball roll-off determines the winner of tied single-game matches.

Squad registration opens January 12, 2026 and closes June 1, 2026. Qualified athletes can log in to BOWL.com and select their preferred squad time. Squad sizes are limited, and once a squad is full, it will no longer appear as an option.

Important: Athletes who have not selected a squad by June 1 will be assigned one by tournament staff. There will be NO changes to squad assignments after June 1, and individual requests for specific squad times will not be granted.

No. Parents, coaches, and other family members are never permitted in the settee area during competition. Only competing athletes scheduled for that squad and authorized tournament personnel are allowed.

For U12 athletes only, one adult with a spectator pass may accompany them during registration and check-in at the trade show and bowling center. U14, U16, and U18 athletes must check in independently.

Equipment & Rules

Athletes may register a maximum of five bowling balls on their Equipment Registration Form. This form is submitted at check-in on the first day of competition and again before match play begins.

Once a ball is registered, it cannot be swapped out for another ball unless tournament management deems it unusable. New balls purchased from host center pro shops can be added if you haven’t reached the five-ball limit.

All balls must have the manufacturer’s name, product name, and serial number clearly visible for identification.

Urethane balls are regulated differently depending on the competition phase:

Qualifying & Advancer Rounds: Slow oil-absorbing high-performance balls (urethane) must be at least 78D hardness. Urethane balls produced before August 1, 2022 are ineligible.

Match Play & Finals: NO slow oil-absorbing high-performance balls are allowed, regardless of hardness.

Additionally, certain balls are prohibited throughout the entire event regardless of material: 900 Global Altered Reality, 900 Global Wolverine, Roto Grip UFO Alert, Storm Electrify Solid, Storm Phaze 4, and Storm Trend 2.

During Qualifying: No surface alterations are allowed during competition OR warmup. You may only clean your ball with a dry towel once competition begins. All sanding products must be removed from the settee area.

During Advancer Rounds & Match Play: Surface alterations are permitted during the warmup session only. Once competition starts, only dry towel cleaning is allowed.

Penalties: First offense results in a warning and ball removal for the remainder of the block. Second offense results in disqualification from the tournament.

Players are allowed a maximum of two re-racks per game during qualifying and match play without permission from tournament staff. Additional re-racks may be requested from the tournament director if the rack is not properly spotted.

Players must mark each re-rack on their own scoring recap form and notify other bowlers on the pair. Taking additional re-racks without permission results in zero for that frame.

In television finals, only one re-rack is allowed per game, with more granted at the tournament director’s discretion.

Awards & Junior Team USA

All scholarship fees collected from entry fees are returned 100% to competitors based on finish position. Scholarships are deposited into the athlete’s SMART account (Scholarship Management and Account Reporting for Tenpins) within 30 days of the final competition date.

The scholarship fund features a minimum 1:7 payout ratioโ€”meaning roughly 1 in 7 entries will receive a scholarship award. Athletes who reach the semifinal round but don’t advance to match play also receive a scholarship award.

All Junior Gold scholarships are held in SMART account #12523.

Members of Junior Team USA are selected annually at the Junior Gold Championships based on the current Junior Team USA Selection Criteria. Athletes chosen for Junior Team USA receive significant benefits including:

โ€ข Representing the United States in international competition

โ€ข Training at the International Training and Research Center in Arlington, Texas

โ€ข Expense-paid national and international travel and competition

โ€ข Access to world-class coaching

โ€ข Scholarship awards

โ€ข Automatic seeding into the following year’s Junior Gold Championships

Note: Canadian and other foreign USBC Youth members may compete for scholarships but are not eligible for Junior Team USA selection.
