What Is the USBC Masters?

The USBC Masters is widely regarded as the most prestigious event in bowling. As one of the five major championships on the PBA Tour, it offers elite amateur and professional bowlers the opportunity to compete for a title that carries historic weight and exceptional prize money.

The tournament began as an invitational event showcasing national and local bowling stars and has grown into one of the sport’s most coveted championships. It features 15 games of qualifying over three days, followed by a double-elimination match-play bracket where the top 63 players plus the defending champion battle for the title.

Why the Masters Matters

The USBC Masters is a PBA Tour major championship, placing it among the most significant titles a bowler can win. Victory here cements a player’s legacy alongside bowling legends like Earl Anthony, Walter Ray Williams Jr., and Jason Belmonte.

The 2026 USBC Masters returns to Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, Michigan – one of bowling’s most iconic venues. The television finals will air live on The CW Network on Sunday, March 29, 2026.

Equipment Rules

The USBC Masters has strict equipment regulations that differ from standard league play. Understanding these rules before you arrive is essential.

Critical: No Urethane Balls Allowed

The USBC Masters does not permit any slow oil-absorbing high-performance bowling balls (urethane). This includes all urethane balls regardless of hardness rating, plus any urethane balls produced prior to August 1, 2022. Review the complete Ineligible Ball List before competing.

Ball Regulations

Equipment Storage: Competitors may have a maximum of 12 bowling balls in the equipment storage room at any time. Violation results in a $50 fine per ball over the limit, and excess balls will be removed.

Ball Registration: Document each bowling ball used during a round on your score sheet by the end of the first game the ball is put in play. Include at least the last four digits of the serial number.

Surface Alterations: Once competition begins, no abrasives, cleaners, or polishes may be used on the outer surface of a bowling ball. Only a dry towel is permitted. Use of abrasives and cleaners is allowed during warmup but never during competition, including match play.

On-Site Drilling

The PBA truck offers drilling services. Submit spec sheets within 60 minutes of completing practice or qualifying. Equipment will be available the next day. No drilling between rounds of match play – only after you’re done competing for the day.

Dress Code

The USBC Masters enforces a professional dress code during all competition, practice, pro-am events, and sweepers.

Required Competition Attire

Shirts:

Collared shirt with your name on the back (2+ inch lettering in contrasting color)

Mock turtlenecks or bowling jerseys without collars are acceptable

Name must be embroidered, silk-screened, ironed on, or sublimated – no detachable plaques

Small fashion logos permitted (max 9 square inches)

Pants/Bottoms:

Men: Dress slacks required

Women: Dress slacks, shorts, skirts, or skorts (length must be below fingertips when standing)

Prohibited Attire

The following items are not permitted during competition:

Tank tops, halter tops, bare midriffs, spaghetti strap tops

Hats (except for documented medical conditions)

Workout attire, leggings, short shorts, T-shirts

Jeans, denim of any kind, or cords

Bib overalls

Bowlers will be required to change if attire is deemed inappropriate. Tournament management’s decision is final.

USBC MASTERS FAQS

Official answers based on the 2026 USBC Masters rules.

Registration & Eligibility

You must have a minimum average of 190 to be eligible for the USBC Masters. This must be verifiable through your USBC membership records.

Yes! The USBC Masters is open to both professional and amateur bowlers who meet the eligibility requirements. This is one of the unique aspects of the tournament – you can compete directly against PBA Tour stars if you qualify.

If current membership cannot be verified, you must purchase a USBC Associate membership card at the tournament site before competing.

The prize ratio is at least one (1) for every four (4) entrants (1:4). Prize funds are paid within 30 days of the tournament conclusion via Electronic Funds Transfer or mailed check.

Format & Competition

Qualifying consists of 15 games bowled over three days – five games per day. Each competitor bowls three blocks on rotating squad assignments to ensure all bowlers experience both fresh oil and burned lane conditions.

If there’s a tie for the final position needed to complete the match play field, tied bowlers compete in a one-game roll-off on a neutral pair. If still tied after the game, a one-ball roll-off continues until the tie is broken.

The defending champion receives an allocated position held until the tournament entry closing date. They must pay entry fees and bowl all qualifying squads. They’re seeded according to qualifying score, but if they finish below the lowest match-play qualifier, they’re placed in the lowest match play position.

The pattern will be Sport-compliant and posted at the tournament venue no later than the start of the first official practice session. USBC does not release the pattern in advance.

Equipment & Rules

The USBC Masters prohibits all slow oil-absorbing high-performance bowling balls (urethane) to create a level playing field on Sport-compliant lane conditions. This includes all urethane balls regardless of hardness, plus any urethane produced before August 1, 2022. Using an ineligible ball results in disqualification.

No. Once competition begins, only a dry towel may be used on your bowling ball. Abrasives, cleaners, and polishes may only be used during warmup, never during competition. Sanding products must be removed from the competition area entirely.

Each bowler is allowed two re-racks per game during qualifying and match play. Additional re-racks may be granted with tournament management’s permission.

Mobile and electronic devices are prohibited during competition. This includes cell phones, tablets, laptops, and iPods. Devices used during competition will be confiscated, and you’ll receive a Code of Conduct violation.

Logistics & Conduct

Roll call is 30 minutes prior to your first round of competition and prior to the first round of match play. Players who miss roll call or are tardy will be assessed a $25 fine.

If you’re late for any round other than your first, you receive zero for each frame missed. If you’re not available at the official starting time for your first round, you will be disqualified and replaced by the next person on the standby list.

Yes. All players must be available to participate in at least one Pro-Am as needed. Failure to participate in an assigned Pro-Am squad results in a Code of Conduct violation.

No. Competitors are not permitted to drink alcoholic beverages while competing. This applies from the start of your warmup session to the last ball thrown for score in qualifying, match play, and finals.
