Vice President of Bowler Development. Gaines, recognized for many years as one of the top bowling coaches in the U.S., will lead the company in a new nationwide coachinginitiative.

"BowlersMart has an unbelievable foundation when it comes to brick and mortar pro shops, as well as fast-growing online initiatives," said Jeff Ussery, Vice President of Operations at BowlersMart. "The addition of John Gaines gives us a new facet in our business that will help not only feed those other areas, but will also increase bowler retention and lead to great things for our industry," added Ussery.

Gaines is an industry veteran, with accomplishments including 4 USBC Open Championship titles, a U.S. Amateur Championship, and was recently inducted in to the USBC Hall of Fame for outstanding USBC performance. While his credentials speak of the high level accomplishments that few bowlers reach, Gaines is very aware that the entry level bowler is the foundation of our sport.

"Too often our sport tends to look at the high level bowler as the one to help out or coach. The fact is that an extremely small number of people can move past that 220 range to the next level. But there’s tens of thousands of bowlers out there that can move from 80 to 120, or from 160 to 200. It’s these bowlers that we’ll be most focused on. It’s the bowlers at the ground floor that need the most attention. If we can teach the fundamentals of the game to a group of beginning bowlers, they’re sure to enjoy our sport longer and participate in it more often."

The BowlersMart pro shop chain has announced the addition of USBC Gold level coach Richard Shockley to its staff.

Shockley, a former Team USA National Team Assistant Coach and former Team USA Junior National Team Head Coach, was a part of the inaugural USA Bowling Gold Coach class of 1999.

“While BowlersMart’s core business is pro shop sales, we recognize the need to support other areas of the sport to feed our core business. We have to continue to develop bowlers from a young age in order to secure the growth of our sport,” said Cliff Barnes, President of BowlersMart.

“I am extremely excited to join the team at BowlersMart and have the opportunity to share my 30-plus years of coaching knowledge with bowlers of all skill levels,” said Shockley. “We all know that when bowlers improve their skills, they stay with our sport longer and enjoy it much more. The possibilities are endless to be able to coach for BowlersMart, and I look forward to getting started.”

Shockley will start at BowlersMart in mid-September, supporting operations in the Rockford, Ill., and Chicago markets.

Shockley, who spent five years on the PBA regional men’s tour in the 1980s, said he got into coaching because he wanted to give back to a game that has given so much to him.
“It’s such a big deal to me to see people improve their game,” said Shockley, who moved here from Port St. Lucie, Florida. “When they do well, it’s great because they are getting it and that makes it fun and exciting.
“I coach all levels of bowlers from new beginners to the professionals” he said. “Everyone has different abilities, so it’s about helping them to reach their best potential.”
