Specifically, drilling placement—either through or away from the precession wing—changes how the ball reacts downlane. Consequently, bowlers can adjust their equipment to fit almost any situation.

Pin Up Layout (Traditional Thumb Bowlers)

When placing the thumb hole away from the precession wing, several benefits occur:

• First, it helps the ball hold its axis rotation for steady performance
• Additionally, it creates stronger backend motion with a sharper entry angle
• Therefore, this layout is ideal for open angles and changing lane conditions

Pin Down Layout (Traditional Thumb Bowlers)

In contrast, drilling the thumb hole through the precession wing creates a different reaction:

• Initially, it produces an earlier, smoother hook with a rounder shape downlane
• Moreover, it boosts asymmetry and ball dynamics
• As a result, this layout works best for straighter angles and fresh oil patterns

Two-Handed Bowler Layouts

Similarly, two-handed bowlers can adjust their ball reaction through smart drilling choices:

• Pin-to-COG 3½” to 5½” (through precession wing): This setup results in earlier, smoother motion with better control
