Luke’s League Bowling Ball Arsenal: His Picks For A Complete Bowling Bag

These are our picks for our 5 ball plus spare league arsenals!

Hey everybody, have had a lot of people asking about what Angel and I usually carry to league, so I thought I’d count down kind of our top 5 favorites right now, usually take 6 just because and one apiece is a spare ball.  Storm, Turbo Grips, BowlersMart, Coolwick, SRGBBFS, and Royal Crest Lanes in Lawrence, KS sponsor the videos, follow the links in the description or at the end of the video for your bowling needs at Bowler’s Mart, that associates your purchases with me, use my code Rosdahl10 for 10% off at Coolwick, and check out the SRGBBFS group on Facebook for all things SPI, specializing in used, rare, and overseas equipment.

How Many Bowling Balls Should I Have For League Bowling?

So who takes 6 balls to league anyway?  We do, because we want to, and it’s hard to narrow  40 balls down that far in the first place, let alone lower.  Whether it’s for fun or just in case something goes sideways, there’s nothing wrong with taking 6 balls, matter of fact I think 4-6 is a pretty common number.

LUKE'S BOWLING BAG - CURRENT BOWLING BALL ARSENAL

Lets Start With The Most Important Bowling Ball in Anyone’s Bag – The Spare Ball

We’ll start with me and I’ll talk spare ball first, it’s really the most important one, and my . . heaviest use ball . . recently . .  I’m a big fan of the Storm off white mix bowling ball, number one because I don’t really like spare balls.  I’m used to throwing reactive at stuff, but I can’t quite flatten my hand out enough over here, so I started missing a lot of left side stuff inside because even smoother stuff boinks over here.  The Mix is a great compromise because you can see it does have enough grab to stabilize but roll true.  Plastic can sometimes hydroplane or even back up, and the Off White gives me the roll of reactive on the lane without the hook or sharpness.

Storm is synonymous with high performance, but not everyone is in the market for premium performance. The Mix’series is perfect for recreational bowlers just getting their feet wet or the seasoned veteran needing a straighter option for spare shooting. The Mix’s traditional 3-piece core enhanced predictability while the urethane coverstock ensures durability that other materials just can’t offer.

The Traditional 3-piece Core enhances predictability no matter who rolls it. Whether it is a beginner’s first ball or a touring professional?s main spare converter, everyone can rely on this tried-and-true core.

The super durable U1S first generation urethane coverstock is the most durable shell that Storm currently offers. Historically, polyester covers have been known to chip and break. If you want a ball to withstand the test of time, look no further than this cover.

Roto Grip Hustle Camo Bowling Ball Is A Favorite Currently In My Bowling Bag

The next ball is perhaps my favorite right now, and it’s the Roto Grip Hustle Camo bowling ball.  I shot my second lefty 300 with it recently, it’s clean, but rolly, it’s firm on the backend but not sharp, it lets me catch it a bit more and not worry so much about chucking it down the lane, which is a lefty way of life usually.  It’s about the perfect strength too, I don’t HAVE to catch it to get it to move, I can play straighter or hook the entire lane if I have the friction for it, it shapes well from straighter and from deep, I’m not locked into any one zone on the lane.  It can handle the fresh most of the time, and is a rare instance of the factory shine actually looking pretty good for a change.  It’s just a nice, controllable, consistent ball.

Roto Grip RST X-2 Bowling Ball Makes The Cut

Next I’ve been actually throwing the Roto Grip RST X-2 bowling ball a lot lately.  I’ve been putting a lot of time in with the UFO Alert which I’ll talk about next, but the X2 is similarly clean and sharp, and it plays deeper zones more successfully than the Alert.  The Alert is amazing outside of 3rd arrow, but I’ve also needed some boomier stuff that covers more boards to kind of diversify the bag.  I’d been off and on with it, but kind of got the shape figured out and got it broken in, and with the medium strength clean cover and higher RG core for an asym, it’s in Astro PhysiX territory, just not quite as early and rolly, it’s almost kind of a Camo type shape, just stronger naturally.

Given the continued success of the RST X-1, we knew the next ball in the series using the Roto Star Tour Core was going to need a special coverstock wrapped around it as well. So, after countless tests involving multiple players of different styles, we determined that the eTrax pearl material gave us the type of reaction we were looking for, but we wanted something a little more while still using that same chemistry. So, the R&D team went to work changing the ratios and other variables until we settled in on the NEW eTrax PLUS Pearl Reactive formula that provides a larger footprint throughout the entire lane without reducing the responsiveness to friction down lane. Creating yet another viable pearlized coverstock option for the Roto Grip family of balls.

Professional bowlers like to see continuous motion down lane with minimal deflection as the ball enters the pocket due to their rev rates usually being on the higher side. This logic was the basis of development by the R&D team as they looked to create a core that would maintain dynamics after drilling in order to maintain a higher level of core torque down lane. The larger mass at the base of the core does indeed create that. Especially since when drilled, the thumbhole will always end up in the void area not really affect the bottom mass of the core. Thus, making this core a “Tour Level” type core design better known as the Roto Star Tour Core (RST Core).

The Roto Grip UFO Alert Bowling Ball Is ALWAYS In My Bowling Bag

The UFO Alert has been a mainstay since it came out, it’s an earlier, smoother, and rounder version of the X2.  It doesn’t really like to get deeper on the lane, at least not for me, but it’s so good at letting me stay straighter and giving me this clean, round and controlled look that it’s halfway like throwing darts.  It breezes to 30 feet, starts winding up and then just rolls the rest of the way, it really feels like a buffed IQ Emerald or something, and I know why it’s not more popular than it is, but all you closeout sharks are about to get a gift, I can’t imagine the Alert being around much past early 2022.  It should be, it’s one of the best balls in the catalog right now, but people just want to miss out apparently.

Our obsession with helping players of all ages and styles conquer various lane conditions while abiding to forthcoming governing rules, led to the development and creation of the asymmetrical E.T. Core (Equalizer Technology Core) which features built in cavities in order to increase weight displacement after drilling without a balance hole to increase overall ball motion.

The MicroTrax (Micro Nanoparticle Traction) Coverstock offers the optimum balance of midlane traction and responsiveness to friction thanks the blend of nanoparticles throughout the coverstock. This formulation maintains its surface profile texture longer to ensure you get maximum performance while displacing oil at an above average rate compared to other coverstock materials on the market today.

Assembled for every bowler in the universe, the UFO Alert is here to help you navigate those Medium to Medium/Heavy Oil Conditions with ease. No matter your style, no matter your rev rate, no matter your speed, the E.T. Core (Equalizer Technology Core) with its built in cavities, is sure to create great overall core motion every time due to the added mass displacement when drilled. And we can’t forget about the eTrax Hybrid Coverstock which is made of 2 parts pearl and1 part solid. This cover combination aids in creating plenty of responsiveness to friction down lane without being too angular. Thus, making this combination of core and cover one of the most ideal options ever created for most any house type oil condition on planet earth.

The Roto Grip Idol Helios Bowling Ball Is A Welcomed New Addition

The Idol Helios is a new addition to the bag, usually I can’t throw stuff this strong, but it’s also pretty clean up front for how much it hooks.  It’s also pretty strong down lane, and I’ve always loved this look, this round rolly continuous shape.  The Helios is like the Idol and Idol Pro combined, hook of the Idol with the shape of the Pro, it’s something you can just send into the spot and watch it pick up and go.  The rounder shape makes the pocket bigger, meaning that since it’s not sharp or cutting that you should carry better, it’ll trip more 4s, carry more light pocket hits and keep the pins low instead of blasting them up or driving past them.  I mean, it’s already got a 900, several 300s and big 800s on it, and it’s barely just released, so there’s definitely something about it that helps boost scores.  I think it’s really the uncommon combination of length, strength, shape, and control.

The Roto Grip Idol is back, and this time its set to light up the lanes! Introducing the Roto Grip Idol Helios, featuring the proven Ikon core, wrapped in a new XtremeTrax™ Coverstock. This high performance bowling ball will be a great match up on medium to heavy oil patterns.

On the inside you will find the low RG, higher differential symmetrical Ikon™ Core made famous in the original IDOL™. But on the outside, it’s the coverstock of this ball that is going to help you outshine and outscore your competition. Our newest coverstock technology known as XtremeTrax™, features “chemically charged” nano particles which create the highest amount of responsiveness to friction we have ever seen from a nano particle material. But don’t worry, the nano particles will still provide plenty of traction in oil before the “chemical charge” kicks in down lane to provide more change of direction than the original IDOL before it.

Originally introduced in the IDOL™ back in March of 2018, the Ikon Core has become a fan favorite and staple in the arsenals of all the top professionals around the globe. This low RG, high differential symmetrical core revs up in the midlane while providing outstanding continuation down lane which allows it to be used by all styles of players from any angle on the lane.

XtremeTrax™ Coverstock
Derived from countless hours of mixing, formulating, and testing, the Xtreme Traction (XtremeTrax™) material pushes us into boundaries of scientific chemistry. We started with the base materials of our MicroTrax™ coverstock and went down a new path in terms of chemistry by adding different chemicals which in turn created “chemical charges” to the nano-particles, thus making a material that not only digs in on heavy oil, but also provides more responsiveness and reaction down lane than traditional nano materials.

Old Trusty Storm IQ Tour Solid Bowling Ball

Lastly we have a good old fashioned IQ Tour Solid, which is virtually a cheater ball on the left side.  It hasn’t cheated quite enough for me here lately, but I’ve been making it work pretty hard.  This is the definition of average across the board, there’s not one specific characteristic to point out, it’s just a very boring reaction.  Boring equals consistent though, and with the extra shape I have to work with on the left, it gives the IQTS extra shape to work with and that seems to be what it really needs to boost it from control ball to scoring control ball.  With the lower differential, it also lets you get away with drilling it stronger, gives it more punch across the board without flaring a crazy amount, so it kind of turbo charges it while still staying within the IQ Tour idea or the whole point of having the ball.
