League season questions

When does bowling league season start?

Most fall and winter leagues start the week after Labor Day (Monday, September 7 in 2026). Sign-ups run through August, with schedules usually posted in late July. Summer leagues run May through August on a separate calendar. Check your local center for exact dates.

Do I need a new ball or just a resurface?

If it reads later than it used to and the surface looks glazed or feels slick, a resurface usually brings it back, it strips the oil-soaked top layer and restores the original grit. If the ball is three or more seasons old, or the cover has visible cracks or chips, replacement is the better spend. A pro shop can tell you which one in about a minute.

How many bowling balls do I need for league?

One will get you through a night. Two is the jump that helps most bowlers, a benchmark for fresh oil and something cleaner for later in the set. Three covers fresh, transition, and burn. Beyond that you are into tournament territory, where bowlers carry specific pieces for specific patterns.

When should I replace my bowling shoes?

Check the slide sole first, rough, patchy, or thin under the ball of the foot means it will grab. Worn heel brakes are the other tell: drifting past the foul line on your finish means look at the heel. Shoes also pack out over time, so a pair that fit snug two seasons ago may be loose now.

Do I need a wrist support for league bowling?

Not required, and plenty of bowlers never use one. They help most if your release gets inconsistent late in a set, or you are working on keeping your wrist firm through the swing. Cheap enough to try, easy to leave out of the bag if they are not for you.

How far in advance should I get a ball drilled?

Give it at least a week or two before opening night, pro shops get busy in the run-up to league season. Drilling early also gives you a practice session to check the fit, with time to adjust it if it is not right.
